diabetic info

Remember the awesome lollies we had at the corner shop?

Not to put a dampener on it but, Generation X have higher rates of diabetes than any other generation before them according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2020.

Anyone can develop diabetes and it can reduce life expectancy or cause long term complications.

What is diabetes??

Its when you have too much glucose in your blood stream, and the body can’t convert it into energy see - https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/about-diabetes/what-is-diabetes/ for more information.

Surely glucose running around the body isn’t so bad?

In the long term it can cause:

  • Blindness or vision impairment

  • Inability to feel sensations in the limbs - high risk of injury and amputation.

  • Heaps bigger incidence of heart attack or stroke - glucose damages the blood vessels.

Majority of people with diabetes get the Type 2, which is pretty much from to our poor eating habits, limited activity and global obesity.

Diabetes Australia, 2022 lists the following symptoms that are common with diabetics:

  • Thirstiness

  • Tiredness

  • Passing more urine

  • Skin issues not healing

  • Dizziness

  • Weight gain

  • Blurred vision

If you are concerned please visit your GP, and keep an eye on your blood tests regularly.

Why do we ignore the warning signs?

Some people don’t see diabetes or other chronic conditions as a threat until it’s too late. Our inability to act can relate to addiction to sugar or alcohol (high sugar content), peer pressure, unable to see how the benefits of a good lifestyle will outweigh changing a habit, readiness to really make a change for good. It’s not usual and it doesn’t make you a bad person or a failure.
